SID's mission is to provide suitable facilities, services and activities to cope with the challenges and opportunities the South Islay community will face in future years. SID puts creativity and entrepreneurial spirit at the heart of its work in the community.
Working across South Islay, SID empowers people by developing skills and supporting projects that create local opportunities, employment and community spirit.
SID owns and manages community buildings and land, safe-guarding these important spaces for the community, and reinvesting profits to create long-term economic, social and environmental benefits.
Formed in May, 2011, SID, as a community anchor organisation, has led the community-based regeneration of South Islay devised in consultation with the local people and organisational groups. The priorities were to improve facilities, services and employment opportunities and SID are now taking forward a variety of initiatives across a range of facilities, services and activities to deliver these aspirations.
SID have continued the vital services of the only Filling Station in South Islay, which also contains a small retail outlet, jetwash, hoover, air compressor and waste disposal unit. The motorhome park is adjacent with 12 motorhome hook-up points, and a WC, Shower & Laundry Block.
In addition, SID has worked with the Port Ellen Harbour Association in the development of new pontoon facilities at Port Ellen, and the purchase of The Old Bank building to host the new harbour showering facilities. It has also taken organisational control of the Port Ellen Playing Fields Association.
